a) When was BERMBACH Handcrafted founded?
BERMBACH Handcrafted was founded in January 2017.
Find out more about our company here: About us

b) Supported BERMBACH Handcrafted Sustainability & Fair Trade?

We attach great importance to sustainability and for this reason we have chosen the material rattan. Our partner is not Fair Trade certified, but works according to European standards and pays its workers above average.

c) How are the suppliers / partners selected?

Our partners should comply with the principles and style of our company. We prefer to work with small companies whose philosophy we identify with. We are against working with large companies like Amazon.

d) What are the advantages of the materials used compared to conventional products?
In addition to the environment, the global popularity of the rattan plant is also taking its toll on the wages and long-term supply of Indonesia’s native population.

The rattan palm is the most intensively harvested plant in Indonesia, accounting for 75% of total cultivation. The rattan industry employs more than 2/3 of the total population and 80% of the rattan harvested around the world is grown in Indonesia.

The massive scale of export has made the country dependent on a high demand, whilst the population now working in this sector benefits minimally from the ‘success’ of rattan export in general. This also has something to do with the high taxes now imposed on rattan export, which is currently more than 400 tonnes annually. As a result, when it comes to selecting our manufacturer, the working conditions have to comply with European standards and workers’ wages need to be appropriate.

3a) What makes the beds from BERMBACH unique?
Any BERMBACH - bed is made purely by hand and is in itself a small, unique work of art. The shaping of the material depends on feeling and great precision - because its resistance, one of the outstanding properties of the beautiful natural material, is always a challenge, even for experienced craftsmen. Stencils and other traditional tools help to create harmonious, even baskets. But no tool can replace the great craftsmanship experience required for rattan processing. For this reason, we work together with an experienced Japanese-Indonesian manufacturer who has revived and perfected the traditional craft of rattan braiding in Indonesia in modern companies. The art of this craft paired with our love for detail comes in every BERMBACH - child's bed to the expression.
